Business Card GSM + What does it Mean?

The first step to creating a great first impression with a client or a potential client is to have a well-designed business card that creates an impact. There are several types of business cards. You get to choose the material of the card, the thickness, the color, fonts and lots more before you actually narrow down on the content to be printed.

What is the GSM of a business card?

GSM stands for grams per square meter. And this is a unit of measurement of the weight of the business card. This would thus be an indication of the thickness of the card. It would also indicate the quality of the card and the overall finish.

Quality of the card

When we talk about the quality of a card there are some that look posh at the first glance and then there are the others that look plain. The impression that a card creates is not just with its visual appearance and the content on it but also on how the card feels. When you hold a business card if it feels solid and firm if it feels heavy and of high quality then it definitely makes a great impression on the business.

Finishes of the card

The thickness or the GSM value of the card determines the type of finish the final outcome that is possible on that card. Matter and glossy finishes can be accentuated by choosing the right GSM for the card. The color and fonts of the chosen content would also stand out better on a fine finish card.

Various GSM choices

Talking about the GSM choices the most common ones are the cards that bear GSM values of 250, 300, 400 or 500. If you are looking for a simple card which is the least expensive then the ones that come with lower GSM numbers would be your best pick. In fact, most of the small business owners stick with standard 300GSM cards. Higher numbers like 500-600 GSM are often considered to be luxury finish cards and these are the ones that impress the clients easily. If you want nothing but premium finish then 1100GSM card would be an ideal choice.

Size & color matters

Finally, once you have chosen the GSM value for the business card understand the best finishes possible on it. Choose the color of the text as well as the size of the fonts aptly so that they can make the best use of the chosen card of the chosen thickness. You would also have to think about the size of the card and the shape. Though rectangular ones are the most commonly used there are cards that come in other shapes as well. But to keep it professional and to play it safe it is a good idea to stick with the conventional rectangular shape.
